Home > Greywater Facts

Greywater is wastewater from the laundry tub/washing machine, the bath and the shower.  (Wastewater from toilets and kitchen areas is not grey water). This water can be used on lawns and gardens.

Is it safe?

It is very important to handle greywater safely and responsible.  Untreated greywater  can be very dangerous. If stored for more than 24 hours it can

·         turn septic

·         produce offensive odours

·         provide conditions for the growth of micro-organisms

·         breed mosquitoes.

Untreated greywater will be contaminated by the products used in the laundry/bathroom.  This may include: soaps, creams, oils, detergents, cleaning products, with all the chemical ingredients of those products.

Green Source firmly believes untreated greywater can be extremely dangerous, with severe health and environmental risks.  We recommend the use approved treatments systems.  Such systems, collect, store, treat, and disinfect greywater to specific standards (See the Queensland Plumbing and Wastewater Code).

Use a Green Source treatment system to make greywater safe.

Green Source has partnered with “Nubian Water Systems” supplier of the choice product in greywater treatment. The benefits of Nubian include:

·         Slimline Product: only 0.5m wide which can fit neatly against a side wall of your home

·         Biological Treatment: No Harmful chemicals used in the treatment which eventually flow to your yard

·         Continuous Treatment: Handles continuous and high water volumes

In Queensland the Nubian OASIS GT600 system is accredited by the Department of Infrastructure and Planning. Approved uses are lawn and garden spray irrigation, toilet flushing, washing machine, vehicle washing and path/wall washdown.

Although the initial cost of “treatment” systems can be higher than a simple hose and pump, the benefits can strongly justify the investment.
